Making your own DIY linen spray and air fresheners infused with essential oils is not only inexpensive and versatile but one of the easiest ways to experience them. Day 10 of our 12 Days of Christmas DIY series focuses on making your own sprays, allowing you the ability to rid your home of some of the synthetic, made-made toxic chemicals found in homes and office spaces. Air fresheners, linen sprays and scented candles and the harmful chemicals they contain are responsible for some of the worst indoor chemical air pollution found in homes and office buildings. Pure, genuine essential oils have the power to eliminate, not just cover up odors without adding toxic chemicals. Prepare your own sprays and begin experiencing their soothing and powerful aromatic effects around the house or office.
Best of all, there are various ways to use them and they also make inexpensive gifts. Prepare a couple of your favorite sprays and include a bottle or two, or samples bottles of oils to go along with them. Try using them to…
- Mist bed linens / pillowcases, including your child’s favorite blankie or stuffed animal just before going to bed with Lavender or Young Living’s Peace & Calming essential oil blend
- Spray and freshen items that can’t be easily washed… curtains, mattresses, upholstery, car seats, furniture, carpets and rugs, shoes and sports equipment
- Spray musty smelling tents and sleeping bags
To make linen sprays and air fresheners you will need just a few basic supplies you probably already have on hand. There is no set “recipe” or ratio, so experiment with the ratio of liquid to essential oil until you find what works for you. Below are various ways to try. Personally I prefer to use the 2 oz bottles with plain ole water. I shake it well before each use and making only 2 oz’s at a time allows me to mix things up a bit and change the scents as desired, although I do have favorites. I tend to use some over and over again, like the Lavender and Peace & Calming linen sprays.
LIGHT SCENT PROPORTIONS
1 cup liquid (8 oz) to 10 drops essential oil (your choice)… increase or decrease amount of essential oils used depending on how strong of a scent you want.
-
Liquid
3/4 cup tap water (or distilled)
1/4 cup witch hazel, vinegar or vodka- helps suspend and disperse essential oils
Combine in an glass spray bottle preferably, shake well, and spray as needed. Plastics contain petrochemicals and should be avoided if possible.
POTENT SCENT PROPORTIONS
2 oz bottle with 10 drops of essential oil (your choice) and water makes a potent spray.
AIR FRESHENER TIPS
When using as air freshener be sure to hold hand up high and spray up towards the ceiling so that molecules stay suspended in the air a little longer, allowing the scent more time to permeate the room. Favorites to try… Citrus Fresh, Frankincense, Lavender, and Christmas Spirit among many others.
2 oz. spray bottle with 10 drops of Purification, and distilled water- spray in indoor spaces or on various surfaces to eliminate odors and add a fresh, aromatic boost.
LINEN SPRAY TIPS
2-oz. spray bottle with 10 drops- Peace & Calming or Peace & Calming II™ and distilled water- spray linens or air to inspire a relaxing, gentle, and pleasant aromatic atmosphere.
2-oz. spray bottle with 10-12 drops Lavender/purified water mix next to my bed and spritz pillow and linens nightly.
