Gummie Worms are very popular so it should come as no surprise that Gummie Vites (children’s vitamin) has been a big success too. But what if I was to tell you that there is a way for you to make a homemade version of this popular candy… they’re called NingXia RED Gummie Vites.
I recently ran across the recipe below and was immediately drawn to it. NingXia Red is a powerful antioxidant drink that contains whole NingXia wolfberries … delivering vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and phytonutrients. What a great way to get NingXia Red and other VALUABLE nutrients into children in a fun, tasteful way! I’d bet even picky eaters will LOVE these. Making your own version gives you the ability to add other very beneficial ingredients like gelatin, one of the main benefits of bone broth; and probiotics and enzymes.
Parenting is oh so rewarding but hardly ever what I would call easy! There is so much thought and care that goes into everyday life especially in the early years. After all, it’s on the job training for most of us and you want to make sure that you’re doing a good job. It’s pretty much a 24/7 job… at least to do a good job, right?
When I had my first child I decided very early on to make my own baby food. One, it was much cheaper to do so, and second, I knew exactly WHAT was going into the food I was preparing. No need to worry about preservatives, fillers and who knows what else. It gave me control over the ingredients. I would make meals and then use the blender to liquid them, and then place in ice cube trays and freeze for future use. In the beginning I made sure it was very basic meals without added salt and spices but even then I found it much more tasteful than the store bought baby food. I figured that they would eventually be eating the full version of these foods anyway so why not start introducing them at an early age- much less chance of them becoming “picky eaters” this way too. I have to assume that my reasoning was correct as none of my children are what I would consider picky eaters.
For those of you with picky eaters you know how difficult it can be to get these children to eat, much less in a healthy manner in order to get the needed nutrition their growing young body’s require. Hopefully with this recipe you’ll breathe a little easier knowing all the healthy benefits these little “vites” contain. Have fun with this recipe and experiment by adding other oils to boost the flavor and benefits! Another version uses Thieves with Lemon and Lavender. Let your creative “juices” flow (pun intended) and don’t be afraid to experiment using other oils. Always check label for proper usage. Be sure to let the gelatin dissolve first and and let liquid cool before only adding essential oils.
WARNING: Whatever you do I would suggest that you keep it a SECRET how healthy these little “vites” are for them. Just let them think they’re a new snack or treat… it’ll be our little secret.
NingXia Red Gummie Vites
1 cup NingXia Red
1 cup kombucha or water kefir
1/4 cup Great Lakes Unflavored Gelatin
2-4 T raw honey or maple syrup-to taste (optional)
1 teaspoon probiotic powder (or vitamin powder of choice)
1-3 capsules of enzymes
3-5 drops of essential oils (optional)
Stir NingXia Red, kombucha, gelatin and honey together in a double boiler until it reaches blood temp (98-100 degrees on candy thermometer) and keep stirring till smooth. Remove from heat immediately. Whisk in probiotic powder (or other vitamin powder) and essential oils. Pour into molds or glass dish and allow to firm up for 10 minutes in freezer. Pop out of molds or cut into cubes.
Keep the gummies in sealed glass containers in the fridge. Used glass vitamin jars would work well!
NOTE: Many grocery stores now carry kombucha in bottles, not sure about “water” kefir but I bet you could make your own. Just “Google” it as my kids often tell me!
