Instead of using toxic air fresheners and scented candles, begin to create an aromatically safe home. I diffuse genuine, premium-grade essential oils, not to be confused with the cheap chemical-laden synthetic versions found at your local store. Most of the time I do so with a purpose. This means I don’t just diffuse essential oils to make our home smell good. I diffuse essential oils because of their limitless potential and beneficial value. Diffusing creates a healthy ionized room, can neutralize (not mask) odors, provide an uplifting environment and help elevate moods, force dust to the floor, provide a calming environment to support a better nights sleep, support better focus, and even promote better energy for those occasional afternoon slumps, and so much more.
For instance, today, I have lots of mental work to do so I’ve got my diffuser on my desk diffusing CLARITY™ essential oil. Clarity™ blends Basil, Rosemary, Peppermint, and other essential oils for an aroma that invites a sense of clarity and alertness. There are some other good oils or combo’s to use for mental work. Here are some of my favorite combo’s to use in my diffuser:
- Looking Forward… 4 drops ea- Frankincense & Copaiba
- Awaken I… 4 drops ea- Brain Power & Clarity
- Awaken II… 4 drops ea- Lavender & Frankincense
- Calm & Focused… 4 drops each- Vetiver & Cedarwood
- Problem Solver… 4 drops ea- Geneyus & Frankincense
SIMPLY INHALE THEM
Another trick I learned recently… when preparing to do a lot of mental work is to alternate using DiGize™ and Thieves® essential oils. I place 1-2 drops of DiGize™ in the palms of my hand and energize. To energize oils simply drop 1-2 drops of your choice of essential oil in the palm of your non-dominant hand and rub together in 3 clockwise rotations to awaken or energize the oil. After energizing the DiGize™, cup hands together loosely and bring over nose. Inhale slowly and deeply 5-7 times. Repeat with Thieves®. At first I thought it a strange combination but once I remembered about the brain gut connection it made perfect sense. I suggest you give it a try sometime!

DITCHING TOXIC CHEMICALS
Its important that each of us be in the drivers seat when it comes to our own health, and that of our family’s. We live in a very toxic environment. Many of the items and products found in our homes are constantly releasing toxic chemicals into the air. Many are endocrine disrupting and cancer causing. Its vital that we not only learn about their dangers and how to reduce toxic exposures but then begin replacing them with healthy alternatives. We don’t have to be perfect consumers but we should learn how to become the gatekeepers of our own home and strategically determine what household and personal care products we allow inside.
The air we breathe is just as important as the food we eat. One of the biggest culprits in our home is the air quality. Tight construction makes our homes more energy efficient than in times past and eliminates or reduces outside moisture, dust, pests, pollen but it also means less drafts, which isn’t necessarily a good thing if our homes are full of toxic chemicals. With our homes being tightly sealed its more important than ever to make sure that the air quality inside our home is safe and clean.
Most of the everyday, common household products being used by everyone have carcinogenic and toxic effects. I encourage people to do their own research. Choose the name of one of the products inside your cabinets (bathroom, kitchen or laundry rooms) and then look at its Material Safety Data Sheet (public info). You will be shocked at what you find.
Toxic VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are commonly found in air fresheners, aerosol sprays and scented candles. Three of the worst offenders- air fresheners, toilet deodorizers and scented candles.
I was recently cleaning out some cabinets and found these buried in the back. I paid good money for these but didn’t think twice before tossing them in the trash, where they belong…. because I’ve educated myself on their dangers and I’m not willing to put our health at risk.
- Air fresheners and toilet deodorizers- These sweet smelling culprits can damage our health. They often contain a chemical called 1,4-dichlorobenzene, or 1,4-DCB, which has been linked to lung damage.
- Scented candles- Scented candles may release lead, mercury, and other toxins into the air that you breathe. Particularly hazardous- the slow-burning types of candles that offer hours of inviting coziness. These types of candles often have shiny metal wicks made of pure lead, or a mixture containing lead. The lead particles are small and may float through the air for extended periods of time, then settle on furniture and carpet where they can be touched and ingested by children, adults, and pets.
In large amounts, candle emissions can harm your nervous system, heart, and circulatory system; particularly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
I actually removed the wax from a couple of these containers and now use to infuse oils into Epsom salts before soaking in the tub.
Honestly, just eliminating these products from your home would be a huge improvement and I can’t think of a better way to ditch and switch, than to diffuse our genuine, premium-grade essential oils instead.
Great blog post! Gonna have to try some of the recipes given!
