Bio-Accumulation: Low Doses Matter

Bioaccumulation refers to the accumulation of substances, like chemicals or heavy metals, in an organism over time, particularly when these substances are absorbed faster than they can be eliminated.
Everyday exposure to these substances, even in low doses, matter!

Exposure to low concentrations of common endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) matter and over time can lead to chronic health problems. EDCs, also known as hormone disruptors, are chemicals that interfere with the natural hormones in our bodies and plague our modern world. We are all exposed to EDCs in our daily lives, for example EDC’s are found in some food packaging, pesticides, cleaning products, and cosmetics.

Over 1,400 chemicals have been listed as potential endocrine disruptors. Decades of peer-reviewed research has shown significant associations between EDCs – even in low doses – and adverse health effects such as cancers, fertility problems, obesity and some learning disabilities. EDCs can have severe negative effects on the hormone system of even unborn babies. Hidden toxins in our homes can affect cognition, productivity, vitality, and yes, even our emotional state.

You may be thinking, “Oh come on now, it’s just a little bit.” Yeah, think again…

It’s just a little bit of chlorine in your water.
It’s just a little bit of heavy metals in your food.
It’s just a little bit of benzene in your sunscreen.
It’s just a little bit of aluminum in your deodorant.
It’s just a little bit of PFOA’s in your nonstick pans.
It’s just a little bit of phthalates in your plastic toys.
It’s just a little bit of methanol in your surface cleaner.
It’s just a little bit of artificial coloring in your toothpaste.
It’s just a little bit of synthetic fragrance in your perfume.
It’s just a little bit of toxic chemical*s in your dryer sheets.
It’s just a little bit of ammonia in your sugar-free sweetener.
It’s just a little bit of propylene glycol in your skincare products.
It’s just a little bit of sodium lauryl sulfate in your laundry detergent.
It’s just a little bit of lead, mercury, and other toxins in your scented candles.
It’s just a little bit of formaldyhe in your sleepwear and clothing to make them wrinkle-resistant and flame-resistant.

Everything you eat passes through your liver first. It is the filter for your entire body. After years of ingesting toxins and synthetic chemicals from the food you eat, that filter gets clogged and backed up. This could be why you’re tired, your head feels foggy, you feel bloated and have trouble sleeping. Your system is literally overburdened. At some point, the accumulatiion to all this “just a little bit” of toxic chemicals, whether from the foods you eat or the chemicals you’re exposed to in your home, workplace or environment, it all becomes way too much for the body to handle! This accumulations places undue stress on the liver causing oxidative stress, which in turn can lead to the production of free-radicals. Free-radicals are supposed to be kept in check by your liver. The burden placed on the liver by all these toxic chemicals hinder the livers ability to generate or regenerate glutathione, aka the master antioxidant, and free-radicals get out of control.

It’s a good idea to be detoxing regularly to flush out this accumulated waste. When you finally begin to cleanse your liver you may start to notice your digestion is better, you have more energy, your thinking is clearer, your skin has a healthy, youthful glow, and you feel lighter and sleep better too.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: When you’re doing a cleanse or detox, your body starts dumping these toxins and it becomes very important to make sure that you’re also increasing your intake of fiber and antioxidants. You see, fiber will grab onto these toxins and help usher them out of the body, thus reducing the load on the liver. The more toxins your liver has to process, the more antioxidants are needed, especially glutathione, to help neutralize the toxins. It’s important for you to understand, that when you have more free-radicals than antioxidants that’s when all sorts of chronic health issues start to manifest… a compromised immune system, autoimmune disease, endocrine system and hormone disruption, gene’s begin to mutate, and yes, even cancer.
