Anyone who still believes that essential oils are just some new age fad are sadly uninformed and totally ignorant of the facts.
The use of essential oils or “aromatics” goes back thousands of years, before the time of Christ. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts show that they held a very high place in those civilizations. Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician whose works were published around 400 B.C, considered them an important part of his recipes. Science is only now beginning to investigate and research their incredible properties as is confirmed by the tens of thousands of published scientific studies on essential oils. There are over 1,700 on Frankincense alone!
It seems that throughout history, essential oils have held a unique position in the universe of God’s natural substances, and for good reason. The most well known is Frankincense which, in ancient times, was reserved only for royalty or the very rich and considered more valuable than gold. Even today, Frankincense, considered to be the highest “spiritual” oil, continues to be used during religious ceremonies, and during times of prayer and meditation because of its ability to help improve communication with the Creator. The bible describes frankincense and myrrh being given to the Christ child at his birth by the Three Wise Men.

Essential Oils in Ancient Times
In ancient Egyptian history, Imhotep (2nd in command to Pharoah) is credited with introducing essential oils into Egyptian life. So you can imagine my surprise, my “ah hah” moment when learning this and instantly recalling a very interesting article that I had read years ago, way before learning about essential oils. This article, “Could Joseph and Imhotep have been the same person?” states that compelling evidence suggests that JOSEPH of the Bible and Imhotep could be one in the same person. If true, this would mean that the biblical patriarch, Joseph, is the one who ushered in the use of essential oils into Egyptian life. WOW!
Biblical References to Essential Oils
The first specific mention of essential oils in the bible is in the book of Genesis, in the story of Joseph, the biblical patriarch! See the dots connecting here with the article mentioned above, if in fact what the evidence suggests is correct?
“As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.”- Genesis 37:25
The second reference, is while Joseph’s brothers plot his demise. His brothers seeing a chance to profit financially, instead of killing him, they sell him to a caravan of Midianite traders, on their way to Egypt… carrying “spicery, balm and myrrh.” While in Egypt he is sold to Potiphar, an officer of the Pharaoh. As Dr. Stewart puts it…
“To make a long story short, (Genesis 37-50), Joseph eventually found favor with the Pharaoh and was elevated from a slave to a ruler of all Egypt– second only to the Pharaoh himself (Genesis 41:37-45).”
Dr. David Stewart, author of several books on essential oils, has done extensive research and states that the bible contains over 500 direct and indirect references to essentials used in aromatics, incense, and ointments. During biblical times essential oils were inhaled, applied topically and massaged into the body, and taken internally. The people of this time clearly understood that their benefits extended to every aspect of our beings: physical, emotional, and spiritual.
He believes as do I, that true, genuine, essential oils are God’s gift to mankind, that plants and the essential oils that they contain are a gift from God and imbued with His intelligence from the 3rd day of creation. The biblical creation story in Genesis begins with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” And the book of John begins with… “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” God used His WORD and spoke them into existence. How can they not be imbued with His very essence.
Genesis 1:11-13… “Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.”
Clearly the people from biblical times understood that essential oils are a gift from God… that they are special. They are meant to be used with God’s guidance and accompanied by prayer. I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Stewart that…
“They have been a gift too long ignored and misunderstood. The time has come to correct those misunderstandings and bring essential oils back into the uses for which God intended them.”
“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the house of the wise.”
