Incorporating Essential Oils Into Recipes

I love incorporating essential oils into recipes. It’s a lot easier than some might think and only takes a second. Adding essential oils to a recipe has a two fold purpose… not only does it enhance the taste of the dish but more importantly it provides all the benefits of that particular essential oil and assures me that everyone eating the dish receives those benefits.  A great way to share with your family members, especially children, and you don’t even have to tell them.

It really is as simple as adding an oil of the same ingredient. Let me explain… last night I made salsa using fresh produce from my garden, to go with the Taco Salad we were having for dinner. The salsa recipe calls for lime juice, sooooo…. I also add a drop or two of Lime (Vitality) essential oil.

A couple words of caution here though…

  1. I almost never add the oils to something that has to be cooked while cooking it. WHY?…  because when heating the oils at high temps some of their beneficial qualities can be destroyed! Definitely not something I’m trying to do. So, if it’s a dish that needs to be cooked or baked, if possible I will add it at the very end, just before serving in order to preserve all the benefits of the oil. Also…
  2. Young Living’s essential oils are the ONLY ones that I would EVER consider ingesting because of their purity and commitment to quality. So please DO NOT run down to your local grocery store, or even health food store and think that you can ingest oils purchased there.  For more on this topic click here.

The recipe…

FRESH SALSA
Makes appx. 1 quart of salsa!

Combine in blender or food processor:
3 tomatoes (vine-ripened) cut into quarters
1 clove garlic
3 stalks fresh cilantro (chinese parsley)
1/8 cup cider vinegar or red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon sea salt
juice of 1/2 lime

Finely Chop The Following:
1/2 green bell pepper
1/2 red bell pepper
1/2 red onion
1 tomato
1 or 2 fresh or canned jalapeño peppers (adjust to taste)
1-2 drops Lime (Vitality) essential oil

Combine chopped and blended veggies and refrigerate overnight for the best flavor. Best if made the day before but still delicious when eating immediately.

NOTE: If you don’t have fresh tomatoes, or not enough, then just substitute a can of DICED TOMATOES instead but add to blender after already processing the garlic, cilantro, vinegar as you don’t wont to liquify the diced tomatoes.

There are so many benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables- that’s a whole other topic and I will have go into that on another day. Most of us eat way too much cooked, over-processed food as it is, mostly because of convenience. So even if you have to use a can of diced tomatoes for this recipe try adding in at least one tomato to it… you’ll be glad you did! It’ll taste homemade and fresh, increase the number of enzymes and makes your food easier to digest.

I was very generous in using the salsa and still had about 1 pint left over.
