Dirty Little Secrets of the Fragrance Industry

The fragrance industry doesn’t want you to know
about their dirty little secrets!

They don’t want you to know that your favorite scented candles, and personal care and household products… perfume, shampoo, lotion, shower gel, deodorant, dryer sheets, fabric softener, air fresheners, etc. contain a complex concoction of toxic synthetic chemicals, could be the root cause of some of your health issues.

They take chemicals from their stockpile of chemical ingredients, often made from petrochemicals, to produce some of the best smelling, allergy-inducing, hormone disrupting, headache and cancer causing fragrances in the world.

What they don’t tell you about is that many of these chemicals present potential health risks and build up in people’s bodies and pollute it.

According to Environmental Working Group (EWG)…

“When you see “fragrance” on a personal care product’s label, read it as “hidden chemicals.” A major loophole in FDA’s federal law lets manufacturers of products like shampoo, lotion, and body wash include nearly any ingredient in their products under the name “fragrance” without actually listing the chemical.

Companies that manufacture personal care products are required by law to list the ingredients they use, but fragrances and trade-secret formulas are exempt. An analysis of the chemical contents of products reveals that the innocuous-looking “fragrance” often contains chemicals linked to negative health effects. Phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, are associated damage to the male reproductive system, and artificial musks accumulate in our bodies and can be found in breast milk. Some artificial musks are even linked to cancer. And if you’ve got asthma, watch out– fragrance formulas are considered to be among the top 5 known allergens, and can trigger asthma attacks. The same kinds of chemicals are often used for fragrances in cleaning products, scented candles, and air fresheners”.

The EWG also warns…

“beware labels that say “unscented.” It may only mean that the manufacturer has added yet another fragrance to mask the original odor.”

Buyer Beware- It seems there’s no end to the amount of deception they’re willing to use and our government isn’t doing much to stop them. It’s up to you to take control and start making some changes.

Time to Kick Toxic Chemicals to the Curb

Since our skin is our largest organ much more attention needs to be paid to what we’re putting on it.

What you put on your skin gets absorbed into the body very quickly when applied to the skin. Not to mention that you’re also inhaling these chemicals when you spray your favorite perfume, hair spray, deodorant or air freshener into the air.

When inhaled, these dangerous chemicals go directly to the limbic system in the brain. Hmmm… makes me wonder if this could explain the rise of brain cancer rates, in the young and old, in recent years.

Many of these chemicals can be passed to babies in utero. So, if you plan on getting pregant and having babies in the future, the time to ditch and switch is NOW, not after you’re pregnant.

Ever have a child break out in hives only to eventually determine it was from your laundry detergent? I have.

Ever go to a mall and have your hands start itching? I have.

Have you ever walked past a candle shop or perfume section in a store and get an instant headache… and wonder why? More than likely it’s you’re body’s response to exposure to toxic chemicals.

I hope you’re starting to see the BIG picture here and connecting some dots!

We should all be using great caution and giving more thought to what we are putting in and on our body, and the products we’re using in our home.

I say, if I can’t eat it I don’t want to put it on my skin. I also don’t want to inhale these chemicals either.

So, whether you’re applying or inhaling products that contain dangerous and sometimes toxic ingredients, it’s important to remember that some of these chemicals, even the volatile (airborn) ones, are getting stored within the body and placing a huge burden on your body, especially your liver. The time to ditch and switch is yesterday!
