Our modern world and lifestyles inundate our bodies with toxic chemicals. No matter how hard we try its impossible to completely eliminate our exposure to them. We are literally surrounded by them. They are found everywhere… in our homes, our offices, in stores and buildings, and yes even in our food supply. Over time this toxic chemical exposure takes its toll on our body and our health. Its more important than ever for each of us to regularly cleanse and detox our body of these harmful chemicals and toxins on a regular basis, and is something everyone would benefit from. In fact, many health advocates recommend doing a cleanse 4 times a year. Cleansing should be considered a periodic process and done every so often over a period of time, just be sure to give your body a break in between cleanses. Below you’ll find some examples of different types … Continue reading

Homemade Ginger Ale with a KICK!

One of the best things that you can do is to for your health is to ditch all the sugar laden drinks and sodas, and replace them with healthier options like homemade ginger ale or lemonade. Most of the drinks on the market contain either high-fructose corn syrup, which means your drinking a product made from GMO’s which is a whole other subject in and of itself, or artificial sweeteners. Its getting harder and harder but I try to avoid GMO’s like the plague. In recent years studies have shown that sugar is more addictive as cocaine… yep that’s right, COCAINE. Dr. Mercola, an alternative medicine proponent and osteopathic physician, says it’s “one of the most addictive and harmful substances currently known”. If you’ve ever tried to get off sugar and had a hard time doing so, now you know why! And don’t think for one minute that consuming “diet” … Continue reading

Dangers of Synthetic Fragrances

Most people are totally unaware of the dangers that synthetic fragrances pose to our health or how many times we’re exposed to them on a daily basis. Chemical fragrance is really nothing more than a conglomeration of man-made chemicals, many of them very toxic and found to cause many health problems including cancer. Fragrance is found in all kinds of everyday products… scented candles, air fresheners (both plug-in and spray cans), hand sanitizers, laundry detergent, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, household cleaning products, personal care products to include shampoos, deodorant, body washes, and cosmetics. Even in your favorite perfumes and colognes. The list literally goes on and on. If a product has a fragrance chances are its from a toxic soup of chemicals. We are constantly exposed to them and they can be found literally everywhere- in our homes, cars, schools, office buildings, stores, malls, etc. In fact, it’s hard to … Continue reading

I Chose the Path Less Followed

Sometimes life throws us a curve ball… something that we weren’t expecting. We rejoice when its something good or exciting and never complain when that happens, right? However… sometimes good things come to us disguised as something bad, or something to be avoided and can take us down a path that we would not have chosen willingly, and many times they can leave us wondering “Why is this happening?” Because of my life experiences, I can now look back on many of these times in my life and give thanks for them because of the positive changes they produced. There certainly is something to be said for hindsight… its just hard to keep all that in mind while in the midst of a storm. One of these “times” happened years ago when my daughter was just shy of her 8th birthday and is responsible for taking me down the path … Continue reading

DIY Basic Ointment, Salve or Balm

Are you concerned about all the chemicals in products that you use around the house and looking for a way to replace them with natural alternatives? Would you like to start making your own natural, chemical-free ointments, salves and balms, allowing you to know exactly what’s in them? Then you’ve come to the right place. You’ll be happy to find 4 variations of this recipe which will allow you to make either soft, firm, x-tra firm or hard versions. Depending on the application method you’re looking for you may want one that is more like a lotion, other times you may want one for making your own lip balms. Making up all 4 versions in advance takes the guesswork out of what firmness you’ll get before you add your essential oils. When ready to customize yours with your chosen essential oils simply: choose the firmness you want, scoop out the … Continue reading

Choosing the Best Carrier Oils for Your Skin Type

When mixing a carrier oil with essential oils meant for topical use, depending on what you’re using it for, you’ll want to give some thought into choosing the best carrier oils for your skin type for best results and absorption. It’s fun to create our own creams and lotions, and doing so is a wonderful way to individualize them for our own skin type and personal use, or to make gifts for others, while avoiding all the harmful chemicals found in manufactured items. Your skin is like a great big sponge and absorbs EVERYTHING that you put on it, or emmerse yourself in. I love making my own products as it allows me to know exactly what’s going onto, and into my body. During the winter, when skin can get dry, making my own body butter makes a huge diffence in my skin and allows me to customize it … Continue reading

Making Healthy Choices- Killer Sloppy Joe’s

Once you try this Killer Sloppy Joe’s with Portobella Mushrooms recipe I’m sure it’s going to become a family favorite just as it has mine. Loaded with fiber, this recipe also uses portobella mushrooms instead of the traditional hamburger bun which is really helpful for those looking for a healthier version of this age-old favorite, or for those looking for recipes to support their weight management goals. This entree is relatively quick and easy to make which is always a plus in my opinion, and has become one that I use frequently any time of year.   KILLER SLOPPY JOE’S WITH PORTOBELLA MUSHROOMS   INGREDIENTS   large garlic clove 1 white or yellow onion, diced extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) or beef broth 1 pound ground beef 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce (preferably organic) 1-2 tablespoon Bragg’s raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) 1 packet Stevia Plus- for EACH Tbsp of ACV … Continue reading

Incorporating Essential Oils Into Recipes

I love incorporating essential oils into recipes. It’s a lot easier than some might think and only takes a second. Adding essential oils to a recipe has a two fold purpose… not only does it enhance the taste of the dish but more importantly it provides all the benefits of that particular essential oil and assures me that everyone eating the dish receives those benefits.  A great way to share with your family members, especially children, and you don’t even have to tell them. It really is as simple as adding an oil of the same ingredient. Let me explain… last night I made salsa using fresh produce from my garden, to go with the Taco Salad we were having for dinner. The salsa recipe calls for lime juice, sooooo…. I also add a drop or two of lime essential oil. A couple words of caution here though… I almost never add the … Continue reading
